Beloved Partner (Poems: Abdul Punnayurkulam)

Beloved Partner (Poems: Abdul Punnayurkulam)
Once you put me into the nursing home,
you saw a living corpse!
Nursing homes are like junk yards;
people place unwanted things there.
I’m afraid; they may take away my zest!
Within days, my hair and skin become grey

You convinced me that wrinkled or feeble skin is not important;
my inner shining beauty is everything
You praised, ‘Love is blind, and love is forever.’

You admired my patience when I waiting for you in the hot or cold car
I never complained your smelly cigars, despite my asthma!
When we drove together, you enjoyed my hummed tune.
I remember on summer evenings when the sun’s radiance
splashed on my face, you said my face was lovely and feels so smooth.
Whenever you said, ‘I don’t know what I would do without you,
my little Betsi?’
When I recalled those soothing voice,
I was always in a celestial mood.
We had a very good understanding, and you counted on me.

I know now, I’m a bit slow
When you see young and attractive women, you forget everything!
The selfish system stinks!
I wish I would have been born in one of the Scandinavian countries.
I wish we could talk about our sweet memories, instead of throwing
me out to the nursing home or warehouse!

I’m sure one day you will miss your beloved partner…

The Winner

When I heard my name through the loudspeaker,
my ears looked for your cheerful applause
When they presented me with honorable awards,
I searched for you in the audience like I was
searching for a joyous swinging star in the galaxy.
When the crowd brought me home on their shoulders
like a hero, my eyes again wondered;
where was my little dancing butterfly?

You taught me how to climb success fearlessly, tirelessly step by step.
You showed me victory many ways through hard work without giving up!

You said compassion takes courage,
and work with enemies and then make them partners.
And, you said friendship helps beautify life.

You are the winner - not me…

This poem is about a person affected by narcissism. People with this syndrome lavishly praise, cajoles and inspires till their lover maintains her beauty and health. Once it starts diminishing he avoids her.  Their mind is set not to deflect from their thoughts even if their lover takes them to their past and try to evince empathy. I think this poem reflects on the behavior of many men who has this narcissistic tendency. The other poem winner is based on the functions of our mind thinking, feeling and desiring.  We all have ambitions and in our effort  to achieve our goals most of the time our nears and dears play a crucial role.  Their positive encouragement and support becomes instrumental in our success. People with great and noble mind credit their success to their well wishers and relatives.  This idea has been used by writers and scholars in the past and here our dear poet Shri Abdul portrays it simply and convincingly.
