World womens’ Day - Dr. A.Sreekumar Menon
This month, March 8th Saturday is observed as ‘World Womens’ Day’.  It is an awareness day. The aim is to bring awareness to people and concerned Authorities such as Governments regarding the position of women in Society and the problems she faces. Generally men do not understand the importance of the role she plays and how they should treat them. First of all women are not considerate equal to men .In Eastern Societies, they are considered as burdens. Especially in low socio-economic class, they are not sent to school and they are not given education to make them self-supporting. They are assigned household responsibility. Their world if not confined to kitchen, is limited to four walls of their house. The parents of the girl children have to spend more money than they can afford to get them married, as they have to pay dowry and marriage expenses. As there is law prohibiting giving or accepting dowry, the law is circumvented by practice of giving money  or spending for their daughters in some other ways .Women are ill-treated  and tortured by their in laws .Even sons cannot resist attempt of their parents while ill treating their wives .. An awareness   to the people that they should not demand dowry  for marriage and that they should not ill treat  women .They should be treated as the member s of their families .The harassment to women for dowry is much less now than previously. Still, that social evil is not completely routed out.

Men do not see women objectively, in the sense as they see those belonging to their sex, they see them as objects of their lust . This is so in certain socieyies like the one we have in India, where free movements among members of opposite sex are not approved .Women who are not educated becomes more vulnerable to advancements by men . With girls getting more and more educated, they resist the male tendency. Men should be educated to behave decently with women. We find eve teasing at the college level. Students should be educated not to indulge in such acts .Members of the opposite sex should be made aware that they should behave  like brothers and sisters.

Women should be given equal opportunities in educational institutions, for employment and in Social and political life . Governments should pass legislations ensuring equal rights with men in all spheres of life and administer welfare schemes for them.

Women is the foundation of the family .Men however much they try cannot equal  women in giving care to children  .Thus women  has more family responsibilities , particularly in countries like India than  men .Women should be made aware that they should not dilute their role in the families nor neglect their duties by focusing their mind on their career . In other words, their career ambition should not make their families suffer .Children who are gown in families enjoying love, nurturance and guidance of parents especially their mothers  grow up into healthy personalities .Gandhiji said ‘if a man is educated, an individual is educated , if a women  in the family is educated, the whole family is educated ‘. This shows the importance Gandhiji had given to women for the development of the country and I turn the nation. Gandhiji was a proponent of women education and upliftment and he did lot to improve the status of women belonging to poor class families .Women should not be excessively burdened with the responsibilities of running the families. Male members should share some of the responsibilities, particularly when women are employed. These days women seeking education and being employed are common, particularly urban women. They should keep a fine balance between the demands of their families and those of their jobs. Employers should help them in whatever way they can   without being lenient towards them there is wide gap in the socio-economic status between rural and urban women. The state should bridge the gap with accelerated action. When women take up jobs, they should not treat their jobs lightly. They should put maximum efforts and be accountable in discharging their duties.

Thus, the aim of observing World womens’ Day as a special day to bring all round awareness about status of women and the need for appropriate actions on the part of all  . While improving their socio-economic status, simultaneous attempts should be made to make family life stable and nurturing. True spirit with which Womens’ Day is celebrated, to my mind is’ by making attempts to bring about the changes to be brought in as indicated in this short essay .
