As a student at the Hightower High School Medical Academy, and a member of the non-profit organization, Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA), I am doing a Community Awareness project regarding the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP). 

I have already been able to publish articles pertaining to PCIP in several newspapers in major cities such as Boston, San Antonio, Austin, and Houston. I will also have an Ad displayed at AMC First Colony in all 24 theaters from January 27th to February 9th; have been interviewed on radio talk shows, such as Music Masala and KXYZ 1320 AM; have passed out informational postcards to numerous doctor's offices and the general public; and have made presentations at the BAPS temple, school faculty meetings, and the India House.

According to the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, 25 million non-elderly Americans have a pre-existing condition and are left uninsured. However, this statistic excludes the elderly, among which many more people have pre-existing conditions that would leave them uninsured, and it excludes the 82 million Americans who have a pre-existing condition but are lucky enough to have employer based coverage.
Last year, our president, Barack Obama, passed a health care bill that would provide the necessary relief for these suffering Americans. The Pre-Existing Conditions Insurance Plan or PCIP was introduced last year by U.S. Health and Human services for the multitude of people who have been denied health coverage due to a medical condition. It provides many health benefits including treatment for pre-existing conditions and doesn’t charge extra because of a medical condition or decide eligibility on income.
All PCIP insurance plans provide preventive care (paid at 100%, with no deductible) when seeing an in-network doctor and the doctor indicates a preventive diagnosis. Also included are annual physicals, flu shots, routine mammograms, and cancer screenings. For any additional care, the patient will need to pay a deductible before PCIP can pay for his/her health care and prescriptions. After paying the deductible, the patient will need to pay 20% of medical costs in-network. There is no lifetime maximum on the amount of money the plan can pay for your health care. It also covers maternity, durable medical equipment, skilled nursing services ($700/day) and Hospice (Max $15,000), mental illness, emergency services,­­ and outpoint diagnostic studies
